Summer Sports Camp FAQs

What are the dates of the program?

The program will run from July 25th through August 19th. Participants will get to experience a different sport each week.

Week 1 (July 25th through July 29th): Soccer
Week 2 (August 1st through August 5th): Volleyball & Football
Week 3 (August 8th through August 12th): Baseball & Softball
Week 4 (August 15th through August 19th): Hockey & Basketball

What is the timeframe for the program each day?

The program will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM each day. Schedule is subject to change. If the schedule must change, we will notify parents at a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

What is the age range for the camp?

4-14 years of age.

Where will the drop off and pick up location be?

Drop off and pick up will be located on Pine Street at the Gazebo next to the Tennis Courts. 

What is the staff to participant ratio?

There will be 1 staff member per 8 kids registered. Additionally, our Program Coordinator and other City staff will always be on-site.

All employees have been screened, drug tested, and a background check has been conducted.

What does the daily schedule look like?

The daily schedule will change each week depending on the sport your child is participating in. We will do our best to keep parents updated on the schedule.

For Week 1: Soccer, here is what the daily schedule will look like:

Will my child be supervised when visiting the restroom?

Yes. Children will be supervised at all times. A staff member will walk participants to and from the restroom.

What is the plan for super-hot afternoons?

For your child’s safety, if temperatures are high, the program will end at 12:30 PM instead of 3:00 PM. We will ensure to inform parents of the shortened timeframe at least 24 hours in advance.

If I want to pick-up my child early, who do I need to speak to?

A City staff member will be on-site at all times. You may call 509-346-3056 ahead of time to let us know you will be picking up your child and we will ensure to have them ready for pick-up.

I received a call that there will be no transportation the first week of the program, is this true?

This is partially true. The Othello School District cannot provide full transportation services due to their Summer School Program being in session. They will only be able to provide transportation services to select addresses Monday – Thursday, the first week only. Beginning on Friday, July 29th they will begin their full transportation service.

If you have signed up for transportation, you will receive a call or text message from the Parks & Recreation Department to confirm these details.

What addresses qualify for transportation?

Transportation will only be provided for addresses outside of city limits.

What is the emergency plan in the event of an injury, allergic reaction or heat exhaustion?

The Othello Community Hospital EMS Department will be on-site each day to ensure the safety of our staff and participants. In the event of an emergency, City staff will ensure parents or emergency contacts are contacted immediately.

My child has food allergies. How will employees be made aware of their specific dietary restrictions?

Children with allergies will wear a colored bracelet. Staff assigned to your child will have specific information regarding your child’s needs and restrictions.

What does my child need to bring with him/her to camp? What should he/she wear?

Your child should come to camp wearing athletic shoes. Athletic clothes are preferred, but not required. Additionally, if your child has athletic wear that will assist them in each individual sport, please feel free to send them prepared. Examples of items they can bring:

Soccer – Shin guards and cleats
Baseball/Softball – Cleats

On the first Friday that your child attends camp, we will provide your child a camp t-shirt. Please make sure your child wears their camp t-shirt every Friday!

Lastly, we will have water bottles and plenty of sunscreen on-site for all staff and participants.

What does the menu for lunch look like? Can I send my child to camp with a sack lunch?

We have partnered with some awesome local vendors to provide delicious meals to your children. The menu is as follows:

Monday – McDonald’s (cheeseburger, juice, apple slices and cookie)
Tuesday – The Main Stop (lunch burrito and drink)
Wednesday – Time Out Pizza (pizza and drink)
Thursday – Lighthouse Cafe (sandwich, chips and drink)
Friday – Lep-re-kon (sandwich, chips and drink)

*Please note: We will have substitutions for children with dietary restrictions.

What if my child needs to miss a day. Should I call and notify the camp?

Yes. Please call us at 509-346-3056 or send us a direct message on the TeamReach App to let us know your child will be absent.

I missed the deadline to register my child. Can we sign them up on the first day of camp?

No. All children must be registered prior to the deadline.

I initially paid for my child to participate in this program. Now that the program is free, when can I expect a refund?

Our finance department is working hard to get refunds processed and back to you. You will receive an email confirmation when your refund has been processed.

How will we stay informed of camp activities or changes to the schedule?

When there are changes to the schedule, camp staff will notify parents utilizing the following methods:

  • TeamReach App
  • Facebook/Instagram Post
  • Email

Additionally, phone calls will be made to parents who request phone calls as their preferred method of communication.

I would like to stay at the camp the first couple of days to make sure my children are comfortable staying with others. Is this allowed?

Absolutely! We want to make sure that all children including their parents feel comfortable.

Can individuals volunteer to assist with the camp?

Yes! We welcome volunteers to come and assist us with the camp. Please contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 509-346-3056 if you’re interested In volunteering.
